A tachograph is an on-board device that records driving and rest times, speed and distance. Since August 2023, newly registered vehicles in international transport must have the second-generation smart tachograph (Smart Tachograph 2).
Retrofit deadlines in international transport: analogue and digital units by 31 December 2024, Smart Tachograph 1 by 18 August 2025.
Vans: vehicles over 2.5 t in cross-border transport have also needed a tachograph since 1 July 2026.
Why it matters: the records are the basis for checks on driving and rest times and return obligations.
