In short: In Slovakia every vehicle over 3.5 t pays a satellite-based distance toll recorded by an on-board unit (OBU). A 5-axle 40 t articulated truck, Euro 6, CO2 class 1, pays €0.2677/km excl. VAT on motorways; a 3.5–12 t truck with Euro 6 pays €0.1039/km. These rates have applied since 1 July 2025 and remain unchanged in 2026; vans up to 3.5 t need an e-vignette (365 days: €90).
Who pays and where
The toll applies to motor vehicles and combinations with a maximum technically permissible weight above 3,500 kg. Category M1 and N1 vehicles (including with O1/O2 trailers) are excluded and use the vignette instead.
According to emyto.sk, the network of designated sections covers more than 8,309 km (as of 1 July 2026):
| Section type | Length | Toll |
|---|---|---|
| Motorways and expressways | 924 km | yes |
| Class I roads parallel to motorways | 492 km | yes (motorway rate) |
| Class I roads not parallel | 1,145 km | yes (reduced) |
| Other class I roads | 586 km + 1,537 km in built-up areas | €0 rate |
| Class II roads | 3,625 km | €0 rate |
On 1 January 2026, according to operator SkyToll, sections including the D1 Lietavská Lúčka – Dubná Skala (with the Višňové tunnel) and the R2 Kriváň – Mýtna were added; the network grew by just over 27 km.
Toll rates (valid since 1 July 2025, also in 2026)
The toll combines an infrastructure charge with external-cost charges for CO2 and air pollution. All rates are € per km excluding VAT. The national motorway company NDS confirmed on 5 December 2025 that the same rates apply in 2026.
| Vehicle (motorway) | Euro 5/EEV | Euro 6 CO2 cl. 1 | Euro 6 CO2 cl. 2–3 | Euro 6 CO2 cl. 4 | Zero-emission |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 3.5–12 t | 0.1194 | 0.1039 | 0.0979 | 0.0927 | 0.0907 |
| over 12 t, 2 axles | 0.2113 | 0.1919 | 0.1853 | 0.1801 | 0.1781 |
| over 12 t, 3 axles | 0.2914 | 0.2700 | 0.2622 | 0.2557 | 0.2532 |
| over 12 t, 4 axles | 0.3250 | 0.3002 | 0.2903 | 0.2817 | 0.2783 |
| over 12 t, 5+ axles | 0.2951 | 0.2677 | 0.2563 | 0.2459 | 0.2419 |
Class I roads parallel to motorways use the same rates. On non-parallel class I roads, Euro 6 (CO2 class 1) pays €0.0921/km (3.5–12 t) or €0.1942/km (over 12 t, 5+ axles).
A 7.5 t truck falls into the 3.5–12 t category; below 12 t Slovakia does not differentiate by axles.
Discounts: based on annual mileage on tolled sections, each vehicle can earn 8–12% (up to 12 t, from 5,000 km) or 8–11% (over 12 t, from 10,000 km), applied to the infrastructure charge only.
Paying, and the 2027 system change
Every vehicle over 3.5 t must have an activated OBU before entering tolled sections. The toll is deducted continuously from the prepaid balance of the toll account. Enforcement uses stationary and mobile equipment, with the police involved.
Important for dispatchers: the current system ends on 31 December 2026. From 1 January 2027 CzechToll s.r.o. becomes the toll service provider for NDS. Rates, sections and categories stay the same, but:
- vehicle pre-registration opens on 1 December 2026 (online or in person),
- every vehicle needs a new OBU; current units will not work in 2027,
- a refundable deposit per OBU applies (amount not yet published),
- prepaid mode only.
emyto.sk says detailed information will be published from 24 November 2026.
Vans up to 3.5 t: the e-vignette
Vehicles up to 3.5 t (and M1 vehicles regardless of weight) need an electronic vignette, prices incl. VAT:
| Validity | Price |
|---|---|
| 1 day | €8.10 |
| 10 days | €10.80 |
| 30 days | €17.10 |
| 365 days | €90.00 |
If a combination with an O1/O2 trailer exceeds 3.5 t, the trailer needs its own vignette at the same price.
Fines
According to a dnoviny.cz report on the amendment in force since 1 July 2023, the fine for unpaid toll is 50 times the unpaid amount, or €500 where the amount cannot be determined. emyto.sk gives no amounts and refers to minor-offence proceedings. This is not legal advice.
Worked example: 40 t Euro 6 truck
Assumptions: 5 axles, Euro 6, CO2 class 1, 300 km motorway plus 50 km non-parallel class I road, no discount.
| Section | Calculation | Toll excl. VAT |
|---|---|---|
| Motorway | 300 km × €0.2677 | €80.31 |
| Class I road | 50 km × €0.1942 | €9.71 |
| Total | €90.02 |
With CO2 documentation for class 4, the motorway part falls to €73.77 (300 × €0.2459). For full trip costs see truck cost per km and Austria GO toll 2026.
