Short answer: in Austria, vehicles over 3.5 t maximum permissible laden mass pay the distance-based GO toll on all motorways and expressways. The rate depends on the number of axles and the CO2 emission class. A Euro VI truck with 4 or more axles in CO2 class 1 pays €0.5724 per km excl. 20 % VAT in 2026 — one of the highest truck tolls in Europe.
Who has to pay
- Vehicles: motor vehicles with a technically permissible maximum laden mass over 3.5 t.
- Roads: the Austrian motorway and expressway network, operated by ASFINAG.
- Device: the toll is recorded by a GO-Box — a small on-board unit on the windscreen. Every toll-liable vehicle must carry one before entering the network.
Vehicles up to 3.5 t do not pay the GO toll; they need a vignette instead.
Rate categories
Austria groups vehicles by number of axles (the whole combination counts):
- Category 2: 2 axles
- Category 3: 3 axles
- Category 4+: 4 or more axles
Within each category the rate depends on the CO2 emission class (1–5) and the Euro emission class.

Unlike Germany, Austria does not fully exempt zero-emission trucks: they pay a strongly reduced rate.
Special toll sections
Some Alpine routes are not charged at the normal per-km rate but have their own section tariff:
- A 9 Pyhrn motorway (Gleinalm and Bosruck tunnels)
- A 10 Tauern motorway (Tauern and Katschberg tunnels)
- A 11 Karawanken motorway (Karawanken tunnel)
- A 13 Brenner motorway — with a separate night rate between 22:00 and 05:00
- S 16 Arlberg expressway (Arlberg tunnel)
On the A 12 Inntal motorway between the Kufstein border and the Innsbruck-Amras junction, the per-km rate is 25 % higher. These sections can make a big difference on routes to Italy and Slovenia.
Worked example
A Euro VI tractor-trailer with 5 axles (category 4+, CO2 class 1) drives 500 km on Austrian motorways without special toll sections:
500 km × €0.5724 = €286.20 excl. VAT
The same distance on German motorways costs €174.00 — Austria is about 64 % more expensive per km for this truck.
Tips for dispatchers
- Count all axles of the combination. A 2-axle tractor with a 3-axle trailer is category 4+.
- Add the special toll sections separately. A Brenner crossing is not included in the per-km rate.
- Remember VAT. Austrian toll rates are quoted net; the invoice includes 20 % VAT.
- Check the CO2 class of the vehicle — it is registered with the GO-Box and changes the rate.
