Just-in-time is a supply concept in which materials arrive at production exactly when needed, to minimise inventory. For transport this means tight time windows and high punctuality.
Requirements: fixed delivery times, buffer time for traffic and borders, often penalties for delays.
Costs: punctuality costs money – reserve time, double manning or spare capacity must be priced in.
Planning: driving and rest times limit how quickly a driver can cover a route.
