Vehicle utilisation describes how much of a vehicle's available capacity is used – by weight, volume, loading metres or loaded kilometres. Higher utilisation lowers the cost per unit.
Metrics: load-space utilisation (e.g. 30 of 33 pallet spaces) and share of loaded kilometres in the total distance.
Example: a €990 trip with 33 pallets costs €30 per pallet; with 22 pallets it is €45.
Improvement: add-on loads, backhauls and better route planning.
